The casino was a dud that was haemorrhaging money and set to have its license cancelled. The fashion boutiques were money pits. There were allegations of shady loans from organised crime types who delivered cash in brown paper bags, all in a bid to keep various plates spinning.

Creditors came knocking. Bitter lawsuits were filed. Forensic financial investigators began pouring over his various dealings, trying and failing to connect the various dots. Sure, Edelsten had spent big, but there was meant to be a significant amount of money left … but no one could find it. Various courts in the US would later accuse of Edelsten of operating a complex network of shell companies that mortgaged and lent money to each other, transferring vast sums around the globe and back into his pocket in Melbourne via intermediaries.

There was a trust that he was the sole beneficiary of, but the function of which remained a mystery. Despite having not signed a prenup, she eventually walked away with virtually nothing from the divorce — and his almost bitter legal pursuit of her left Brynne herself bankrupt.
