Among those whom he befriended about the time of this crisis was Samuel Hartlib [q. The association between Smith the compiler and John Smith the Platonist is certainly suggestive, but it is by no means compelling on current evidence.

A source which is much less frequently considered is a peculiar collection of sermons and aphorisms printed as Theophoroumena dogmata: Or, Some Select Notions of that Learned and Reverend Divine of the Church of England, Benj. Whitchcot, D. Salter in took this comment by Shaftesbury to refer to an anonymous Compendium of Devotion of ; but this text is not attributed by its editor to any particular author, even though its lengthy contents include an abstract of a single sermon preached by Whichcote on Psalm associated by the editor with St Lawrence Jewry.

Fortunately, there is one sermon from the period which can be reconstructed with some confidence, albeit not in its entirety. In his first letter written in response to Tuckney, Whichcote provided a summary of the offending sermon, drawn from his own preparatory sermon notes.
