Why is matching important

Children can look to see whether they can find another example of a word or letter in the print around them. This will not only reinforce matching skills but also make children more aware of the print around them. Provide a range of activities that encourage children to match objects, pictures, sounds and words. Make sure that activities are at the right level for the children and give them time to process information. We all have a need to feel in control of the world around us and one of the ways in which we attempt to achieve this is by creating order.

For this reason, many children are naturally attracted to sorting objects and do not need much direction. Meanwhile, some children may need more assistance to get started. Sorting is the next step in the process which begins with matching.

When a child puts two objects together according to a particular feature they are matching. Once they group a number of objects together they are sorting. When children sort objects they are learning that some of those things are alike and some of those things are different. References to Research on Matching and Language Development. I have some ideas on my Instagram account to support maths that is not work sheets!

Hi Sam, as parents of young children ourselves, we understand and share your belief. Worksheets are not meant to be a substitute for practical games and puzzles. Worksheets are primarily used for concept reinforcement and NOT concept introduction. It completely depends on parents how they wish to use worksheets. Some use them very frequently while others do not use them in preschool years.

Some use only colouring sheets while others prefer to use them for a wide variety of topics. I enjoyed this article, but I would love to see more practical games and puzzles for children.
