Why ayesha meera was killed
In hindsight, they admit that the mistake was not to secure the scene of crime immediately. But that there was political pressure is not ruled out. Even though Ranga Rao, who passed away in , dramatically offered to quit politics if his grandson was involved in the heinous crime, it was obvious that the police were under tremendous pressure to hang someone as soon as possible.
Rao was a powerful minister in YSR's cabinet and one year before Andhra Pradesh was to go to polls in , even the suggestion of the involvement of the kith and kin of a senior Congress leader in the politically sensitive and important Krishna district could have proven disastrous.
In the midst of the investigation, Vijayawada police commissioner CV Anand sought a transfer out of the city in March, with speculation rife that the unsolved Ayesha case had something to do with his moving out. But despite the political pressure, a polygraph test was done on Satish. Not that the test reports are admissible as evidence but they only reinforced the doubt. The reports revealed that Satish's response to two questions, including whether he knew the hostel owner, was not accurate.
With the case not disappearing from the headlines, Satyam Babu arrested in a phone theft case, was reported to have confessed to the murder. Subsequently when he was taken for medical examination, the police claimed he escaped from the custody of ten policemen.
Dalit organisations protested suspecting it was a time-tested ploy to bump off Babu in a fake encounter to kill the case once and for all. It was then that he was shown as arrested once again. The police story that suggested a crippled man escaped police custody, was full of holes. Was it a case of the police trying to impress their political superiors or someone else writing the script, is anyone's guess.
The court asking for punishment to be meted out to the investigating officers for framing Satyam Babu is a slap on the face of the Andhra Pradesh police. It observed that the real culprits were required to be identified and punished, and failure to do so would amount to miscarriage of justice.
A PIL by the parents of the victim seeking re-investigation or investigation de novo into the alleged murder of Ayesha Meera was instituted. The High Court directed the Special Investigation Team to carry out denovo investigation with utmost expedition.
Leaving out the real culprits is no less a miscarriage of justice, than conviction of an innocent. The investigating officials and the prosecutors involved in presenting this case have miserably failed in discharging their duties. They have been instrumental in denying to serve the cause of justice.
The misery of the family of the victim has remains un-redressed as the perpetrators of a horrendous crime, involving extremely ruthless and savage treatment to the victim remain unpunished. A heartless and merciless criminal, who has committed an extremely heinous crime, has gone scot-free. Judicial criminal administration system must be kept clean and beyond the reach of whimsical political will or agenda, and properly insulated from discriminatory standards or yardsticks of the type prohibited by the mandate of the Constitution.
The earlier investigation was unfair and was more an attempt to make Sri Satyam Babu a scapegoat, than to bring the guilty to book, as is evident from the failure of police officials to take the investigation to its logical conclusion. A cloud of suspicion hangs over and grave and serious doubts are cast on the impartiality and fairness of the earlier investigation. More than a decade has elapsed since Ayesha Meera was killed on Keeping in view the peculiar circumstances of the case, and the ample evidence and revised perspectives as stated above which glaringly demonstrate the subversion of justice delivery system, with no congenial and conducive atmosphere still prevailing, it is time that the case be re-opened and the findings and reports of the CBI and also into the findings of the Special Investigating Team constituted to carry out de novo investigation of this case be looked into.
Still, no leads on who committed the murder. While the acquittal of Babu was a matter of relief for many, the main question: Who killed Meera? Therefore, the High Court apart from acquitting Babu and awarding him compensation has also directed for two fresh FIRs to be filed in the case. The case is now being handled by the CBI.
The police, however, say they want to challenge the acquittal of Satyam Babu. The orders for reinvestigation of the case were given because of the PIL public interest litigation filed by Rama Melkote retired professor of Osmania University, Sajaya Kakarla and V Sandhya Rani activists because even after the acquittal of Satyam Babu no steps were taken by the Government to either catch the culprit or punish the erring officials. The activists said that when innocents are punished and guilty people left free it shakes the confidence of the lay person in the judiciary.
Satyam Babu, who was acquitted in April is a happier person now. In a conversation with TwoCircles. Earlier at the prison, his health had failed and he could not even stand on his own, he was away from his mother and sister, suffering all the time. But gradually he recovered and could walk once more. Currently, he is jobless but hopes to find some work soon. I hope and pray that one day they too will get justice.
It goes without saying that the CBI has an extremely tough case in their hands now. The hostel warden and the immediate roommates of Meera in the hostel are allegedly missing. It is assumed that they have left the town. Further, fresh reports also say that Meera was not raped as there was no injury to her private parts. And that there were ants on her body indicating that her body was lying in the bathroom from a long time. Some lawyers are of the opinion that in order to mislead the investigation, the body was defiled in a manner to make it look like it was murder with the primary motive of rape.
And some sources informed her that Meera did not like the fact that there were liquor and outsiders at that party apart from the hostel inmates. And Meera is said to have objected to this. And an argument ensued between the outsiders who were partying there and Meera in which her head was banged on the wall due to which she died.
And then her body was dragged to the bathroom and all other telltale signs like the scrawling on her chest and other love letters were left to mislead the investigation. But apart from this being just hearsay there is no evidence to prove that this is what happened that day.
No support from Muslim leaders and Muslim religious organisations. Every year on December 27, solidarity meetings are organised for Meera by her supporters. But an activist on the condition of anonymity told TwoCircles. The Jamat e Hind is very large and their presence is also strong in Vijayawada but so far they have not shown any kind of support to the bereaved parents.
